Visiting the Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi
If you are in Abu Dhabi, visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi is an absolute must. The mosque is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the UAE and easily one of the most photographed places in the country.
You can combine your visit with a Day in Abu Dhabi or even a stay at the Ritz Carlton Grand Canal which has the most incredible views of the mosque.
We have a real thing for white buildings, all our homes have been white, our wedding venue was white… so stepping inside honestly felt magical. The marble, the symmetry, the reflection pools, and the chandeliers completely take your breath away.
If you’re visiting during Ramadan, the experience is even more serene and reflective. You can read all about what it’s like, including visiting hours, dress code, and tips in my guide: Visiting the Grand Mosque During Ramadan.
Here is everything we wish we had known before visiting….
What to Wear to the Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi
One of my biggest stresses before visiting the Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi was the dress code. And rightly so. They are strict. If you are not dressed correctly, you will be stopped before entry and asked to fix it.
It’s not the end of the world, but you really do not want to end up standing in a shop for half an hour, trying to piece together an outfit you will probably never wear again, with a slightly grumpy hubby standing beside you.
So if you are wondering what to wear to the Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi as a non-Muslim, here is exactly what worked for me and saved a lot of unnecessary stress.

I wore a long dress (abaya) that nearly touched the ground and a proper hijab scarf from Namshi. It stayed in place, was breathable, and kept me comfortable throughout the entire visit. Buying the outfit in advance made everything so much easier and saved me from any last-minute stress. But don’t worry, if you forget something, there are plenty of shops along the way to the mosque, all ready to help you pick up the right attire.
What Men Should Wear

For men, the dress code is simpler. My husband wore long trousers and a long-sleeved T-shirt. However, he later realised that short sleeves would have been completely fine. Men only need to ensure their shoulders and knees are covered.
