Excited for the next UAE public holidays in 2024? If you’re new to the UAE, you’ll notice that things work a bit differently here—many celebrations are based on religious dates determined by moon sightings. Islamic months last for 29 or 30 days, depending on when the moon is seen. Committees across the UAE look out for the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the start of a new month. This leads to exciting surprise holidays that can shift by 1-3 days! The 2024 UAE Public Holiday calendar has been confirmed (see below), but remember, due to moon sightings, they might shuffle around a day or two! Following New Year’s, keep an eye out for Eid al Fitr right after Ramadan. If astronomers have it right, Ramadan could start on Monday, March 11, 2024, placing Eid al Fitr on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. This might give UAE workers a nine-day break, spanning from April 8 to April 12, counting the weekends.
Remember the six-day Eid al Adha weekend in 2023? Unfortunately, this year won’t top that, but UAE workers can expect four blissful days off in 2024. Astronomers anticipate Arafat Day, linked to the Hajj pilgrimage, falling on Saturday, 15th June. If that happens, Eid al Adha will follow on Sunday, 16th June, and its holiday stretch will extend till Tuesday, 18th June. So, watch out for a potential four-day weekend from 15th to 18th June!
The Islamic New Year is expected to fall on Sunday 7th July. Whether this will lead to a public holiday on a working day is yet to be confirmed.
The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday might happen on Sunday 15th September. If there’ll be a public holiday on a working day is still uncertain.
Every December, the UAE gears up for the National Day celebrations, and 2024 is no different. Commemoration Day might occur on Sunday 1st December, resulting in a public holiday on Monday 2nd December, and Tuesday 3rd December. This would mean another four-day weekend is on the horizon.
